Wanted to drop a quick line that Saturday rides are still up and running strong (even if the coach has been a little too busy lately).

This Thursday's meeting is canceled, however look for the next meeting to take place on November 15.

Also, uniforms have been ordered and we can expect them in December.

Be there at 6:00 am.
Race begins at 7:40 am.

Be ready and dressed out (shorts, jersey, socks, etc.) when you arrive.
Be on time.
For those of you who are racing, remember your Authorization To Ride Form (from your USA Cycling account) and your USAC Event Release Form (available here) signed by your parent.
Go to bed early and eat a healthy, low-fat breakfast.
Per NDP rules, 1 service hour is received for every 2 hours at this event. Anyone present for the whole event will earn 6 hours.
Verify travel plans to and from the event as soon as possible.
Remember to bring street clothes to change into after the race. Event t-shirts will be provided.
Food and drinks will be provided all day long.

A Note On Team Gear

This year all the team gear will be fully customized to display Notre Dame's colors and logos, will include a greater selection of items (such as jackets, gloves, and warmers), and will be of a slightly higher quality than last year (at a lower price, none the less). Thanks to all the people who showed up at the meeting yesterday. We had quite a turnout! It looks like we'll be adding 5 or 6 new riders. Very nice.

This year's Registration Packet is available HERE. Please download it, complete it, and turn it in to Mr. Medhus in room 405 as soon as possible. It includes a calendar for events through November.

Note to current riders: The Registration Packet must be completed and turned in no later than Friday, September 7 (two weeks from today) in order to be eligible to compete in the State Championship Time Trial.

Summer Training Camp

Notre Dame Cycling is hosting a Summer Training Camp just for junior cyclists (ages 12-18). The camp runs from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm on June 25-29, and 6:00 am to 9:00 am on June 30. It is held at Notre Dame Preparatory (98th St just south of Bell Rd) and run by USAC certified coaches and other highly qualified exercise, fitness, and cycling experts.

Each day, the athletes go for a training ride and then participate in skills clinics (handling, safety, cornering, etc.) and classroom sessions (nutrition, race strategy, training fundamentals, mechanics, etc.). Lunch and full ride support (food, drinks, mechanical, etc.) are provided and each participant receives a t-shirt and water bottles.

A road bike with clipless pedals and a helmet are required. Cost of the camp is $300. E-mail us with questions, DOWNLOAD THE FLYER, or click on the button below to register now!

Soup And Bread Dinner

Mr. Ray Medhus, cycling club sponsor and all around good guy, is leading the 1st Annual Soup Bowl Benefit on Tuesday, March 27, from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm in the NDP cafeteria. Tickets can be purchased for $10 directly from Mr. Medhus.

This event is what has kept Mr. Medhus in on Saturday mornings (and prevented him from riding) as he helped students to make bowls for the benefit in his ceramics studio.

Free IMAX Matinee

Through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Brian Cappellini, free tickets are available for Cycling Team members to see the IMAX movie "Wired To Win" at the Arizona Science Center. The film explores the physical and mental challenges of bicycle racing by following two teammates competing in the Tour De France. It plays daily at 12:00 pm through the end of March.

First Practice

It's time to officially start the cycling season! Bring all your gear, including your bike, to school for our first practice on Thursday, January 11.

You can store your gear in Mr. Medhus's room if you bring it in before school. Lockers will be assigned during practice.

Practice starts right after school and will go until 5:30 pm. Please dress out and meet in Mr. Medhus's room by 2:50 pm. We will also be taking our team photo for the yearbook.

BIG NEWS! On Thursday, December 14 we are holding a private screening of The Tour Baby! at Harkins Shea 14, an excellent film about the Tour De France from behind the scenes. All proceeds go to help the students of Notre Dame High School Cycling.

THERE'S MORE! There will be an incredible prize drawing available where you can win a Notre Dame Cycling Team bike (Specialized Allez Expert - $2300 value), Team clothing (including jerseys, shorts, and t-shirts), Phoenix Suns tickets, books by Joe Friel, and The Tour Baby! Handling And Safety Clinic Just Added

We have just added a Handling And Safety Clinic to our calendar.

After the Club Ride on November 4, members of the White Mountain Road Club will be helping us teach valuable lessons about how to handle a bicycle. We will cover using clipless pedals, basic shifting, handling traffic, road conditions and hazards, riding with others, and communicating on the road.

Be sure not to miss this Club Ride and allow enough time to stay for the clinic afterward.

Our First Ride

We had our first Club ride this morning and it went very well. We put on about 15 miles in just over an hour and rode around the DC Ranch and Grayhawk areas. Fun was had by all.

Best part...? We're doing it again next week! Come join us next Saturday at 7:00 am in the Notre Dame south parking lot for another great ride.

We will leave Notre Dame's south parking lot at 7:00 am (changed from 6:30 am) and will be back around 9:00 am. We will regroup often to be sure everyone stays together.

Riders are required to have...

1. Helmet
2. Two full water bottles
3. Safely operational bicycle
4. Signed permission slip (for students only)

A road bike (curved handlebars, skinny tires) is highly recommended but not required. Please e-mail us for more information.

As of 3:00 pm yesterday, Specialized Bicycle Components has stepped up to offer Notre Dame Cycling their "Factory Team" level sponsorship package which includes incredible (translated: well-below wholesale) pricing on a wide variety of their products, especially bicycles. This represents yet another obstacle being removed from making cycling accessible to our students.

Bell Bike Helmets has generously offered to give the Club free helmets! This is excellent news as it represents another high-profile industry player recognizing Notre Dame's Cycling Club.

It's even better news that these free helmets for Club members will result in reduced Club dues. As more and more sponsorships continue to develop, Club costs will continue to drop. A revised list of equipment and dues will be released shortly, so keep your eye on the website for the latest updates.

Today marked the first official Notre Dame Cycling Club meeting. We had 11 students and two dads come by to hear about our upcoming year. Thanks to all who took the time to stop in. Tell your friends what you learned.

Speaking of the upcoming year, there is a new calendar posted on our site (it's over there on the left). It is filled with great opportunities to go riding, learn about cycling, and watch some great races. Check it out often, as it will be constantly updated with new things to do.

And The Wheels Begin To Roll

Notre Dame Cycling Club Rides officially begin Saturday, September 23, 2006. We will meet in the south (student) parking lot and leave promptly at 6:30 am. The ride will run 20-40 miles and will average 15-17 mph. There will be several regrouping points, so no one will be left behind. This will be a recurring event each Saturday.

A helmet and two large water bottles are required. A road bike is strongly recommended. Be aware that this ride will travel on public roadways around North Scottsdale and is subject to traffic (and its laws).

Please bear with us as we begin our group rides and allow our club to find its balance of skill and fitness.

High School Cycling Around The US

There are 16 high school level cycling clubs in the US (Notre Dame being the newest addition).

14 of those clubs are mountain biking clubs.

10 of the mountain biking clubs are in a Northern California league.

The other 2 clubs (both road racing clubs, one of which is Notre Dame) are the only clubs who are sponsored.
